Get Critical Information About Divorce And Related Matters
Divorce can be devastating. This can be one of the most emotional times for everyone involved. There are many different layers to a divorce that must be navigated by an experienced Staten Island divorce attorney if the best possible outcome is to be achieved.
The New York lawyer you choose should also be mindful of your goals and your concerns while providing candid, efficient legal representation.
I am attorney Kurt Richards and, after more than 25 years of experience, I have successfully represented more than 3,000 clients in New York in their divorce matters.
Choosing The Appropriate Path Given Your Specific Situation
At my firm, Kurt T. Richards, P.C., I believe there are two ways to work through a divorce: the easy way and the hard way. By making use of open communication, we can file for an uncontested divorce — the easy way. The more assets and the longer the marriage, however, the more difficult it can be to get both parties to agree — leading to litigation or, as it’s otherwise known, the hard way.
By taking a straightforward approach to family law, I communicate effectively with my clients as we determine the outcome of each individual case.
When ‘Irretrievable Breakdown’ Occurs
In October 2010, New York state adopted a new domestic relations law as grounds for divorce. Known as an irretrievable breakdown, this law states that one party must swear under oath that the relationship broke down irretrievably for at least six months prior to the commencement of the divorce action. In order to obtain the divorce, however, any and all assets, spousal support, child support and custody matters must be previously resolved.
